Pain

Pain is weakness leaving your body....except for papercuts, those just suck.
http://highschoolsportsstuff.areavoices.com/2015/01/20/one-sport-athletes/ This was an interesting read. I don't get the recent "one sport" mentality. Your odds of becoming a professional athlete are still slim to none (unless you're named Manning). I think the athlete really misses out on diversity in learning by becoming one-dimensional. Personally, I was a two sporter. Football in the Fall and track in the spring and before that baseball. I took winter to train and focus on other stuff (not to mention my one year of wrestling was more than enough) and summer was a mix of baseball, softball, golf and training for football.

Treadmill and Fitbit

I got a Fitbit for Christmas. I've kind of become obsessed with getting my 10,000 steps in most days. My torture device of choice for getting these in has been the treadmill. Unlike a lot of people, I seem to have a pretty good tolerance for being a hamster on a wheel. The right music can keep me going for a long while. I typically pick some live metal performance or something fast (e.g. Slayer). Sunday's I try to put in a little extra TM time and was able to jog off 5.1 miles on the dang thing this evening. I feel good, although I also feel the pull to get in and do some lifting as well. For the moment I'll take the victory in getting my steps in.

Best

Good, better, best Never let it rest Until your good is your better and your better is your best!

Week(end)

Okay, I've got to start throwing crap up here, even if it's not the most useful yet. I will say that I am frustrated at how my work week ends compared to how it begins in terms of physical activity and eating.  I usually start the week out decently with two or three days in the gym, at least 4 miles ran, and a bit of lifting to go along with it. By Friday and Saturday I feel like I haven't done anything all week and my calorie intake seems to track a bit higher (I feel like I eat more crap). Fortunately, I tend to find myself back in the gym on Sunday only to repeat the process. Now there are a couple of extenuating circumstances. For example, I am separated from my wife and have the kids Wednesday, Thursday and alternating weekends (called a 5-2-2-5, I guess) that makes it tough to get hte gym time. The overall sum of activities seems to be loaded at the end of the week as well. Daughter has dance, son has kung fu both have scouts and often there are other activities p...

Kickoff

I guess I'm not sure how this page has gotten a semi-substantial number of views even though I haven't posted a thing. Oh well, I guess I should get started posting some stuff. The whole idea behind this blog is based on my experience as a former high school and college football player. I played on the "O"-line my whole career; left tackle in HS and left guard in college (note I'm left handed making the stance easier). I loved my football days, even the times that sucked. It taught me a lot about dealing with adversity and life in general. I was fortunately able to keep away from any major injuries. Just a couple of sprained ankles, knees and a lot of swollen/bloody knuckles. During the whole time I played though the training concept was to be bigger, faster and stronger than the other guy. In terms of diet and exercise this meant a lot of calories, preferably from a balance of protein, complex carbohydrates and vegetables, and a lot of heavy weightlifting. Wh...
