Summer Vacation

I don't know who ever dubbed it "summer vacation". Summer is most certainly not a multi-month holiday or anything that us Americans assume much of Europe is like. In reality the "vacation" is an archaic remain of an agrarian society where kids were needed at home to help tend crops. Farming is now technologically advanced to the point that many farm kids have three months to kill. Better synonyms to describe triple-entente of June, July and August are chaotic, busy, stressful, fast paced, hot, tired, crabby, bug-laiden and "when does school start again?". That said, it's not all awful. I do enjoy the extra time with the kids. They are at good ages where they are agreeable to most things. When they're not I still have enough clout to move them along as I feel necessary. There are a lot of fun activities we've partaken in as well: fishing, bonfires, camping, basketball, pickleball, swimming, bike rides, yard projects (as I call them ...

Frozen Fore!!!

This weekend was a lot of fun. I played a round of golf on frozen Lake Minnetonka in what is dubbed the "Chilly Open" . Essentially nine holes of golf on Ice. They had a chili tasting contest and lots of free stuff from the sponsors. It was a perfect (for winter) 30ish degrees F. I look forward to playing in it again next year.

36 Holes in three days...

...a new record for me (I think). I was took a mental and physical holiday last weekend and stayed with my aunt and uncle near Portland. I had a dear old friend getting married which presented the opportunity. I decided I was just going to try to be helpful, but in the moment for the duration of the trip. I was able to maintain that for the most part. As the title says I got to play a bit of golf at Tri-Mountain Golf Course in Ridgefield, WA. Admittedly my diet wasn't the best as there were many beers consumed, some from a high school friend's brewery in Seattle ( Chainline Brewery ), but it was overall good for the soul to see good family, old friends and relax a little.

Alternative Workout

I helped a friend move today. Lots of furniture lifting, maneuvering, etc. It was a steamy day with high humidity in the mid 80s (F). It got me sweating good, breathing heavy off and on (intervals) and has me sitting in bed tonight tired. It's the original cross-fit workout! I think we spend a lot of time these days getting workouts in the gym when being productive, or even entrepreneurial, can provide excellent fitness. Next time I want to get sweaty and tired, I'll just grab a shovel and go to work in the yard or put out an ad to see if anyone needs any moving help. Afterall, while it feels good to run a couple miles or do some lifting, there's huge satisfaction to be had getting your workout AND getting stuff done around the house.
