Alternative Workout: Concrete

I have a problem. One of many, but we'll just focus on this one here. My driveway isn't draining properly. I had a new one installed three-ish years ago and have for the most part been happy with the job. The old driveway was long past it's prime. It was narrow and crumbling. Somehow, with my deciding to keep the house in my divorce it was decided that a new and improved slab of asphalt would help the process of moving on. I must here give kudos to my folks, proud sponsors of the improved driveway. When strong second opinions and some financial need occur, go to the ones you can appreciate (and be reminded of "that time when..."), see your folks folks. Digressing... One main feature of my driveway is that it is nearly flat. It is also about the size of a regulation pickleball court. It allows for the kids and I to engage in basketball, boot hockey, catch, badminton, etc. without having to "game-on/game-off" in the street. The one drawback of its i...

Exercise Versus Ice Cream

I want Ice Cream too! Last night my son and I engaged in our new routine. We hit the weightroom at the local activity center while my daughter is at her gymnastics class. The first few weeks went well. I had to cancel some expectations of having a fervent training partner for the realization that he's a kid and wants to explore and do some of the things he wants to do. Yesterday was a little different. His school was having a fundraiser at  Chipotle  and one of those build-your-own frozen yogurt stores,  Yogurt Sundae . I caught him after the dinner part of this combination and promised we'd get the Ice Cream after the workout. I guess the kids really likes the ice cream as he proceeded to complain how bored he was and kept asking to go to dessert during the workout. I...

A Boy and His Gym

The school year has started. The frantic pace of summer with it's figuring out who's doing what and when has been constrained to shortened weekday evenings and weekends. Even those have some semblance of structure. This fall's evenings are thus far inundated with gymnastics, soccer, Lego Robotics, Cub Scouts and piano lessons. It's hard to find time and energy to get a workout in edgewise, but try I must. My son getting ready for the end of days.... or just clowning  around at the local surplus store. One window of opportunity is during my daughter's gymnastics class. It's a 90 minute window of time at the recreation center where I am a member. It's an evening my ex-wife typically has the kids so she'll stay and watch while my son stays home. Recently, he has been expressing interest in exercising more. It has even resulted in procuring some free weights and a bench in my basement.  Knowing this, I called on my way home from work and asked ...
