Training Split

I think I'm getting over a lack of motivation and am getting in a mode of getting back to work in the gym and on my diet. Here are a couple of small changes I'm mulling: Exercise Split cardio time with lifting. I.e. 20-minutes cardio, 30-45 lifting then another 10-20 of cardio. Work in some high intensity routines. Find a sport. I've been without for a long time. Diet Become a salad junkie again for lunches. The Fresh Express bagged salad kits are good and reasonably priced. They might be freezable if I find them on sale. I need to buy some protein to accompany them though. Focus  Work in some meditation time to get my head clear and stay focused on my day. I prefer to meditate with a mantra, a word or phrase that I say while I exhale to focus my mind on. Sleep I know the experts say 7 to 9 hours. I'd like to lean towards 6.5 to 7.5 of solid sleep. This can be tricky with evening workouts as it's hard to go to bed with the metabolism all fired up...

Tuesday Fail

The donut-fairy visited work today....I didn't do so well.

Runner's High

I think I'm hitting the running enough to start getting a runner's high. It's leaving me feeling energetic  after my run. I typically use the treadmill (it's damn cold outside here in Minnesota, USA) and vary my speed anywhere from 5.5 mph (8.9 kph) to 7 mph (11.2 kph) and try to put at least 25 minutes in. Sometimes 20 minutes if lifting after.

Pain

Pain is weakness leaving your body....except for papercuts, those just suck.
http://highschoolsportsstuff.areavoices.com/2015/01/20/one-sport-athletes/ This was an interesting read. I don't get the recent "one sport" mentality. Your odds of becoming a professional athlete are still slim to none (unless you're named Manning). I think the athlete really misses out on diversity in learning by becoming one-dimensional. Personally, I was a two sporter. Football in the Fall and track in the spring and before that baseball. I took winter to train and focus on other stuff (not to mention my one year of wrestling was more than enough) and summer was a mix of baseball, softball, golf and training for football.

Treadmill and Fitbit

I got a Fitbit for Christmas. I've kind of become obsessed with getting my 10,000 steps in most days. My torture device of choice for getting these in has been the treadmill. Unlike a lot of people, I seem to have a pretty good tolerance for being a hamster on a wheel. The right music can keep me going for a long while. I typically pick some live metal performance or something fast (e.g. Slayer). Sunday's I try to put in a little extra TM time and was able to jog off 5.1 miles on the dang thing this evening. I feel good, although I also feel the pull to get in and do some lifting as well. For the moment I'll take the victory in getting my steps in.
